From Cubicle to Freelance: Lessons Learned on Boosting Productivity
The Transition
After three years of working in an office, I made the leap to freelancing. The experience taught me valuable lessons about myself, my work habits, and how to stay productive. As a college student, I was accustomed to pulling all-nighters to meet deadlines. However, in a structured work environment, I quickly learned that this approach wouldn’t cut it.
The Importance of a Customized Workspace
At my old job, I had a Pinterest-perfect workspace, complete with two monitors, a tea station, and a comfy pillow. But it took me a while to realize that a cluttered workspace was hindering my productivity. Having a space that sparks creativity and clarity is essential. For me, that means having a drink nearby, my trusty mouse, and some light tunes playing in the background. Identify what works best for you and create an environment that fosters productivity.
Cutting Through Red Tape
One of the most valuable habits I developed was picking up the phone to avoid lengthy email exchanges. Hearing the tone and nuances of someone’s voice can clear up misunderstandings quickly. This approach has saved me hours of back-and-forth emailing. Even as a freelancer, I still make it a point to hop on a call when necessary.
Setting Clear Objectives
In my previous role, I often found myself stuck in hour-long meetings that seemed to accomplish little. That was until our team hired a new account person who set clear objectives for each meeting. This approach streamlined our discussions and kept everyone on the same page. As a freelancer, I apply this same principle to my solo work sessions. By setting clear goals and working backwards to find solutions, I’m able to tackle problems efficiently.
The Power of Saying “No”
Learning to say “no” to tasks outside of my expertise was a game-changer. It’s essential to know your limits and focus on tasks that play to your strengths. By being honest with myself about what I can and can’t handle, I’m able to work more efficiently and productively.
Recharging in Nature
Taking breaks to spend time outside may seem counterintuitive, but it’s crucial for productivity. Fresh air, natural sounds, and a change of scenery can work wonders for your mental clarity. Make time to “unplug” and recharge – your work will thank you.
By applying these lessons learned from my office days to my freelance life, I’m able to stay focused, productive, and motivated. Remember, every minute counts, and it’s up to you to make the most of your time.
