Discovering My Passion Through Volunteer Work
Growing up, I never imagined that volunteering would lead me to a fulfilling career. As a student at Catholic school and later at Manhattan College, I saw volunteering as a requirement, not a passion. But everything changed when I lost my aunt to breast cancer. Her strength and determination inspired me to make a difference in the world.
Finding My Purpose
I joined the Relay For Life Chapter at Manhattan College, where I discovered my passion for connecting people and making a positive impact. As a public relations major, I was drawn to spreading awareness about the event and promoting it on campus. Through this experience, I realized that my goals were deeply rooted in personal experience, which helped me stay focused and determined.
A Career Takes Shape
After graduating in 2012, I started my career in the non-profit field, cold-calling individuals to raise awareness and funds. Although it was challenging, I found joy in connecting with people through the mission. I received two promotions within a year and became a manager, but I wasn’t satisfied. I wanted to do more.
Stepping Up to Leadership
I joined All Island Kiwanis, where I was intimidated at first, being the youngest member and one of the few females. But I took a leap of faith and succeeded, leading projects and connecting people. This experience helped me grow in confidence and ambition.
Following My Heart
Today, I work at Autism Speaks, where I feel like I’ve found my dream job. With three cousins on the Autism spectrum, I have a deep personal connection to the organization. I’m excited to continue growing, learning, and meeting new people who share my passion for making a difference.
The Power of Volunteering
Looking back, I’m grateful for the community service requirement in school, which turned into a lifelong passion. Volunteering has taught me valuable skills, helped me find a work-life balance, and expanded my network. It has provided me with opportunities to connect with like-minded individuals and make a real difference in the world.
