I still remember the thrill of saving up for my first luxury purchase – a pair of XOXO espadrille wedges with pink eyelet and a ribbon to wrap around my ankle. It was the early 2000s, and online shopping wasn’t as prevalent as it is today. I had to stalk the shoe department of my local Macy’s, call the company line, and save up my allowance, dollar by dollar. The sense of accomplishment I felt when I finally got my hands on those shoes was unparalleled. I felt like a ballerina wearing them, and even though I don’t wear them regularly now, they hold a special place in my closet as a symbol of my hard work.

Fast forward to today, and my tastes have become a bit more refined. I’ve set my sights on higher-end luxury items, but I’ve also learned to approach luxury shopping smartly. One of my secrets is the consignment store. Yes, you read that right – consignment stores! While it may seem weird to wear someone else’s old shoes, the truth is that high-end items are often meticulously cared for by their previous owners. And, with a little patience and persistence, you can find some incredible designer gems hidden among the chaos of the vintage/consignment store.
Mastering the Art of Consignment Shopping
So, how do I do it? Here are a few tips:
Be Patient
Don’t expect to find your holy grail item every day. Check back regularly, and be willing to wait it out. Consignment stores typically display their items beautifully, so it’s easy to spot something you love.
Save Up
When you do find something you love, be prepared to buy it on the spot. If you need some time to think, ask if the store has a hold policy. And remember, saving up for something special has helped me save money elsewhere – I’d rather have one quality item than five cheap ones.
Rationalize Value
Not everything you find in a consignment store will be in perfect condition. But ask yourself, would the normal wear and tear of an item happen anyway? If so, the price might be more than fair.
Make Friends
Get to know the people who work at the consignment store. They’re experts on the inventory and can alert you to new arrivals, sales, and hidden gems. Trust their opinions – they know their stuff!
Follow the Stores
Most consignment stores are on Instagram, which makes it easy to scan their inventory without leaving your house. You can even follow stores from around the country and have them ship items to you.
Do Your Research
When in doubt, check the internet. Look up what an item normally retails for, and compare prices. You can also check out websites like The Real Real, The Outnet, or Yoox for high-end items.
Reconsign and Reflect
If you buy something and realize you’re not using it, consider selling it to another store or trading it in for something else. And before making a purchase, ask yourself if it’s truly worth it. Will you wear it? Is it special? Will you regret letting it go?
