Embracing the Unknown: My Journey of Self-Discovery Through Travel
Growing up in a small suburb of Northern Virginia, my world was limited to a tiny radius of familiarity. But everything changed when I took a bold step outside my comfort zone at the age of 24. I embarked on a journey to teach English in Seoul, South Korea, for a year. This experience was a turning point in my life, opening my eyes to new cultures, challenges, and opportunities.
The Reality of Teaching Abroad
Many assume that teaching abroad is a privilege reserved for the few who can afford to abandon their 9-to-5 lives. But the reality is far from it. As a foreign teacher in Seoul, I worked tirelessly for at least 30 hours a week, with minimal planning time due to limited funding. Despite the challenges, I was determined to make the most of this experience.
A Lesson in Humility
Unfortunately, our school went bankrupt, and I had to return home prematurely. This setback could have been devastating, but instead, it taught me valuable lessons in humility and resilience. I realized that traveling is not just about exploring new places; it’s about immersing yourself in different cultures and gaining a deeper understanding of the world.
Breaking Free from Stereotypes
Some may view me as a millennial who quit their job to travel the world. But I know that my decision was well-planned and intentional. I’m not privileged; I’m someone who worked hard to save up and pursue an opportunity that would broaden my horizons. My current boss, who encouraged me to take the leap, understands the importance of seeking new challenges and stepping outside your comfort zone.
The Power of Travel
Traveling has been a transformative experience for me. It has given me a fresh perspective on life, allowing me to see my familiar home in a new light. I’ve come to realize that there’s so much to learn from other cultures and ways of living. As I prepare for my next adventure in Tetuoan, Morocco, I’m excited to continue growing and learning.
Pursuing Happiness
Ultimately, I believe in doing what makes you happy. If traveling is not for you, that’s perfectly fine. But if you have the opportunity to explore the world, I encourage you to take it. Don’t let societal pressure dictate your choices; instead, focus on becoming the best version of yourself. With the right mindset and support, traveling can be a powerful tool for personal growth and development.
