Reassessing Life Choices: Breaking Free from Fear and FOMO
As I stand at the threshold of significant changes in my life, I’ve been forced to reflect on my past decisions. For many of us, life was straightforward before university, but after graduation, the abundance of choices can be overwhelming. We’re torn between seizing every opportunity and playing it safe, fearing that our decisions will dictate the rest of our lives.
The Weight of Sensibility
After completing architecture school, I was faced with a critical choice: pursue a career in my field or take a risk and explore alternative paths aligned with my hobbies, illustration, and game design. Although I had the motivation and skills to succeed, fear held me back. I opted for the sensible route, leveraging my school connections to secure a job at a cutting-edge architecture firm. While I enjoyed my time there, I can’t deny that fear played a significant role in my decision.
The Fear of Missing Out
Social media often reminds me of those who took the leap and succeeded. They dropped out of university, pursued their passions, and became leaders in their industries. Their stories make me wonder if I made the right decision. Did I choose sensibility over courage? I question whether I’m financially independent enough, considering I didn’t expect to be wealthy immediately after graduation.
A Life of Responsibility
Living with my parents allowed me to save money, travel, and maintain a social life. I built an emergency fund, followed a budget, and avoided unnecessary expenses. However, social media showcases friends who are living lavishly, traveling extensively, and not budgeting. This disparity sparks frustration and self-doubt. Did I play it too safe?
Breaking Free from Fear
Reading about others’ successes and failures forced me to reevaluate my choices. I realized that I’ve been given a unique opportunity to reassess my priorities. With a stable income and savings, I can take calculated risks and pursue my passions. My job allows me to focus on side hustles during my free time, and I’m exploring opportunities to move abroad or take extended trips.
Embracing the Future
It’s essential to acknowledge that I’ve made responsible choices, even if they weren’t the most daring. I’m proud of my accomplishments and recognize that each day of responsibility prepares me for the future. Instead of dwelling on what could have been, I’m looking forward to the opportunities that lie ahead.
