The Financial Fallout of a DUI: One Man’s Story
A Shocking Reality Check
Getting a DUI can be a life-altering experience, but what about the financial implications? I recently spoke with Steve Mason, who got a DUI in 2013, to get a firsthand account of the costs associated with this offense.
The Arrest and Conviction
Steve was arrested in August 2013 in New Jersey and convicted in November of the same year. He was pulled over for a minor infraction, but the officer smelled alcohol on his friend, leading to a sobriety test. Steve blew a.17, a staggeringly high number that still brings him shame.
The Financial Toll
The costs added up quickly. Steve spent less than an hour in a cell, but the towing fee was $200, which he struggled to pay. He qualified for a public defender, which cost $200. The punitive fees totaled around $800, including a generic fine, mandatory class, and donations to a drunk driving charity and rehab center. On top of that, Steve faced a three-year, $1,000/year surcharge, which he paid off monthly. He also had to install a breathalyzer interlock on his car for six months, costing $120/month.
The Total Bill
In the end, Steve’s DUI cost him over $5,000, not counting the impact on his insurance rates and market value. He deliberately didn’t pay his surcharge at times, resulting in additional fines. The total cost, including lost income and other expenses, was staggering.
License Suspension and Job Loss
Steve lost his license for seven months, which affected his job as a campus driver. He had to take a minimum wage kitchen job to make ends meet, losing $11.50/hour in the process.
Paying Off the Debt
Steve emptied his college savings to pay off the legal fees. His dad helped by letting him sell antique books to raise money for school. Steve sold the books at a frantic pace, eventually paying off the fees and getting back to school.
Family Support
Steve’s family was furious but willing to help. His dad’s antique book collection became a lifeline, allowing Steve to raise enough money to return to school. Steve has since paid his parents back, interest-free.
Long-Term Consequences
Getting a DUI has had a lasting impact on Steve’s life and finances. The emotional toll was significant, causing deep shame and affecting his relationships. His insurance rates skyrocketed, and he suspects that the DUI may have cost him job opportunities. However, Steve has learned a valuable lesson and is now strict about drinking and driving, keeping a breathalyzer in his car as a reminder.
A Cautionary Tale
Steve’s story serves as a stark reminder of the financial consequences of getting a DUI. The costs can be crippling, and the long-term effects can be devastating. It’s a harsh lesson, but one that Steve hopes will resonate with others.
