Mastering the Art of Working Parenthood: Balancing Career and Family

The Juggling Act of Working Parenthood

As I sat in bed, laptop open, typing away with one hand while massaging my four-year-old’s foot with coconut oil, I couldn’t help but think that this was the epitome of working parenthood. The struggle is real, and every working parent can relate.

A Challenging yet Fulfilling Journey

I’ve been with my company for almost a decade, and during that time, I’ve become a mother of two beautiful girls. My husband, who quit his high-paying job to join his parents’ real estate business, has been a great support system. We don’t have the luxury of nannies or cleaning ladies, but our parents, who live nearby, are always willing to lend a helping hand. Being a working mom is one of the toughest things I’ve ever done, but I wouldn’t trade it for the world.

Finding Balance and Setting Realistic Expectations

One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is to set realistic expectations. As a working parent, it’s easy to feel like you’re failing at something every day. Whether it’s not responding to a friend’s text or letting your child watch TV for a little too long, it’s essential to give yourself a break and be realistic about your goals. I’ve learned to prioritize my tasks, block time on my calendar for family commitments, and communicate openly with my boss about my needs.

Honesty is the Best Policy

Being honest with yourself and others is crucial when you’re juggling work and family responsibilities. I’ve had to have tough conversations with my boss about my availability, but I’ve found that being transparent and logical has always yielded positive results. My boss, who is also a family man, understands the importance of work-life balance and is willing to work with me to find solutions.

Hard Work and Flexibility

I’ve been fortunate to have a flexible work arrangement, but I know that’s not the case for everyone. I believe that my hard work and dedication over the years have earned me the flexibility I need to be a good mom and employee. It’s essential to pick your battles, delegate tasks when possible, and prioritize your sanity.

Self-Care is Not Selfish

As a working mom, it’s easy to put everyone else’s needs before your own. But I’ve learned that taking care of myself is essential to being a good employee, wife, and mother. I wholeheartedly believe that recognizing the importance of self-care makes me a better person in all aspects of my life.

Embracing the Chaos

Being a working mom is stressful, but it’s also incredibly rewarding. I’ve learned to value every minute of it, even when it feels like I’m barely holding it together. I recognize that everyone is fighting their own battles, and I’m just trying to be the best version of myself – as a parent, employee, and person.
