A Bittersweet Career Boost: Lessons Learned from a Misleading Job Offer

Taking the Leap

About three months ago, I landed a coveted copywriter position at a small yet profitable eCommerce website. This new role marked a significant career milestone, as it was my first job with a copywriter title. Although I had some experience in copywriting at my previous job, it wasn’t my primary responsibility. The opportunity to take on this role was too good to pass up, especially considering the promise of a salary and benefits after a 90-day trial period.

The Misunderstanding

During the interview, I was told that the company’s hiring process required a 90-day trial period for all new employees, including those in temp-to-hire positions. This was supposedly due to legal requirements related to their call center operations. I was assured that after the trial period, I would transition to a salaried position with benefits. What wasn’t explicitly stated was that my hourly rate of $15 would remain the same, equivalent to a modest $30,000 per year. In hindsight, I realize that I made an assumption about a potential raise, which was never guaranteed.

A Reality Check

When the 90-day mark arrived, I was informed that my pay rate would remain unchanged, but I would now be eligible for health benefits and a retirement plan. To say I was disappointed is an understatement. The average salary for a copywriter in my city, Chicago, is around $57,000 per year. Given my experience and job duties, which align more closely with those of a senior copywriter, I was expecting a more competitive offer.

Weighing My Options

I’m torn between feeling misled and wanting to address the issue immediately. However, after discussing my situation with others, I’ve decided to wait until I’ve been in the position for six months to bring up the topic of a potential raise. In the meantime, I’ll focus on making the most of this experience and building my portfolio.
