Rebooting My Career: A Leap of Faith
After graduating with a dual major in history and archaeology, I thought I had it all figured out. I had great internship experience, a decent resume, and a dream job lined up. But life had other plans. The company I was sure I’d be working for offered the position to someone else, leaving me feeling hopeless and unsure about my future.
The Reality Check
With no archaeology jobs in sight, I realized I needed to rethink my strategy. I couldn’t afford an unpaid internship, and most jobs in my field required higher education. Graduate school wasn’t an option for me financially, so I had to explore alternative routes.
A New Direction
That’s when I stumbled upon a certificate program in GIS (geographic information systems) at my alma mater. With my background in archaeological excavation and survey, I knew this could be a game-changer. GIS is becoming increasingly important in various fields, including the humanities. I’d be learning about 3D mapping and landscape modeling, skills that would make me a more desirable candidate.
The Pros and Cons
While I’m excited about the program, I know it’ll require taking out more student loans. However, the cost is significantly lower than a graduate degree, and I’ll be able to defer my existing student loans while completing the program. I’ll need to figure out how to pay for it, but I’m confident it’ll be worth it in the long run.
Making It Work
I’ll need to get creative with my finances. I’ll continue working part-time while pursuing the certificate, aiming to make at least $700-$1,000 per month. I’ll also need to be frugal, cutting back on expenses and finding ways to save. Living with my boyfriend and his roommates in my college town will help reduce costs.
A Leap of Faith
I know taking on more debt is a risk, but I believe this certificate program will be a good investment. It’ll give me a competitive edge in the job market, allow me to pursue a career I’m passionate about, and increase my earning potential. I’m ready to take a leap of faith and invest in myself.
