Breaking Free from the 9-to-5 Grind
Have you ever stumbled upon a book that altered the course of your life? For me, that book was The 4-Hour Workweek by Tim Ferriss. Like many millennials, I was captivated by the idea of achieving financial independence and location freedom. Who wouldn’t want to work from a beach in Southeast Asia for just 30 minutes a day?
The Illusion of the 4-Hour Workweek
However, after pursuing this dream for three years, I’ve come to realize that this lifestyle is somewhat of a fantasy. What I truly crave is freedom and control over my time. I want to generate revenue without being tied to a specific location or schedule.
The Birth of The Modest Man
That’s why I started my online business, The Modest Man, a resource for shorter men who want to dress sharp, feel confident, and live well. I published my first article in April 2012, and it wasn’t until this year that I finally saw significant revenue.
A Glimpse into My Success
Here’s a snapshot of my 2015 performance:
- Unique Visitors: 791,648
- Total Revenue: $36,566
While it’s not a staggering amount, it’s proof that my concept works. This confidence boost led me to leave my 9-to-5 job at the beginning of 2016.
The Freedom of Entrepreneurship
I’m enamored with the entrepreneurial lifestyle. I’ve traveled extensively this year, from 10-day hiking trips to weekend getaways and industry conferences. With my mobile business, I can work from anywhere, and I’ve never felt more alive.
Demystifying My Income
I started sharing income reports on The Modest Man to provide transparency and inspire other would-be entrepreneurs. My revenue streams fall into three categories:
Advertising
Advertising accounts for approximately 60% of my total revenue. I’ve found that selling ad space directly to companies and using ad networks like AdThrive and Federated Media yields the best results.
Digital Products
I currently sell one digital product, The Modest Man Style Guide, which sells consistently. I’ve learned that high-quality content and design are essential for success.
Affiliate Commissions
Affiliate marketing can be a significant contributor to an online business. I’ve found that Amazon converts well, despite its 24-hour tracking cookie limitation.
Future Plans
My goal for this year is to double my traffic and revenue. To achieve this, I need to:
- Get my finances in order
- Redesign my website
- Hire help for tasks like email management, social media, and content creation
Your Turn
If you’re considering starting a side hustle or online business, I hope my story inspires you to take the leap. Remember, the key to success is perseverance and a willingness to adapt. So, what’s holding you back from breaking free from the 9-to-5 grind?
