Escaping the Debt Trap: One Woman’s Unconventional Path to Freedom

Breaking Free from Debt and Expectations

Growing up in poverty, I knew that higher education would be a solo endeavor. My parents, with poor credit and in the midst of a divorce, couldn’t co-sign loans or offer guidance. When I received acceptance into a prestigious out-of-state program, I relied on Pell grants, scholarships, and personal loans to fund my education.

A Degree, But No Direction

I graduated with a double major in English and Marketing, accumulating $41,000 in debt. Despite near-perfect grades, I struggled to find a well-paying job in my field. My loan payments were suffocating, and I felt desperate, angry, and resentful. The contrast between my situation and that of my more privileged peers was stark.

A Radical Decision

After two years of struggling, I made a drastic choice: I took a job teaching English in Milan, Italy, and supplemented my income with part-time marketing work. This move allowed me to escape the crushing debt and start anew. I knew it wasn’t a sustainable solution, but I needed a break from the constant pressure.

Life in Italy

In Italy, I’ve found a sense of freedom and breathing room. I’ve been able to save money, enjoy my 20s, and distance myself from my family’s troubles. My decision has not been without consequences – I’ve damaged my credit score, and collection agents still reach out to me. However, I’m not apologizing for prioritizing my well-being.

A Story Unheard

My experience is often misunderstood. People assume I’m a privileged trust fund kid or a lazy millennial who shirked responsibility. But the truth is, I’ve had to fight for every opportunity, and my decision to leave the country was a desperate attempt to escape the cycle of debt.

A Fighting Chance

I’m not recommending that others follow in my footsteps, but I do hope that my story sheds light on the struggles of those who come from disadvantaged backgrounds. I may have broken the rules, but I’ve gained a new perspective, a new language, and a chance to rebuild my life on my own terms.
