Embracing Happiness and Health in Sustainable Ways
When it comes to making life choices, we often find ourselves torn between what’s prestigious and what’s right for us. In this week’s Ask Chelsea Anything, we’re exploring two very different dilemmas that highlight the importance of prioritizing happiness and health in a sustainable way.
Following Your Heart, Not Societal Expectations
Our first question comes from Full-Time Hustler, who recently quit a boring and unfulfilling office job to pursue a career in the service industry. Despite feeling confident in her decision, she’s nervous about explaining her choice to others, particularly those who might view serving jobs as “starter” positions or side hustles. Chelsea commends Full-Time Hustler for taking control of her professional life and encourages her to own her decision with confidence and clarity. Remember, anyone who judges you for doing something you love is likely an insecure person whose opinion doesn’t matter.
Thinking Beyond the Present
Chelsea advises Full-Time Hustler to start thinking about her long-term plans in the service industry. While she doesn’t need to have a perfectly outlined career path, exploring options and figuring out what makes sense for her will add to her confidence and reduce concerns about prestige. Whether it’s taking hospitality classes, learning a new language, or doing an apprenticeship, there are many ways to grow and develop in the field.
Money Matters in Relationships
Our second question comes from Caitlin, who’s been dating her boyfriend for two months and is concerned about his terrible financial habits. Despite being compatible in many ways, Caitlin’s past experience with financial abuse has made her hyper-attuned to money issues in relationships. Chelsea advises Caitlin to enjoy the early stages of her relationship but also to recognize that it’s too early to know if they’re compatible long-term. While Caitlin’s concerns are valid, it’s premature to address them now. Instead, she should focus on getting to know her partner better and seeing if their values align.
Addressing Financial Issues in Relationships
Chelsea shares her own experience of having a similar conversation with her partner Marc about a year into their relationship. The key to success was recognizing her own flaws with money, being willing to change, and relinquishing some control to Marc to get her finances in order. If Caitlin’s relationship progresses, a similar conversation may be necessary, but for now, she should focus on building a stronger connection with her partner.
