Reflections on a Trip to California
As I sit on this flight back to New York, I’m filled with gratitude and a newfound appreciation for the life I’ve built. My recent trip to California was a rollercoaster of emotions, marked by unexpected loss and a chance to reevaluate my priorities.
A City That Wasn’t for Me
Los Angeles, with its sprawling streets and auto shops, felt more like a collection of suburbs than a vibrant city. The emphasis on the entertainment industry and the constant pitching and networking wore me down. I realized that I thrive in environments with good architecture, long walks, and changing seasons – a far cry from LA’s perpetual sun and four-lane streets.
Finding Solace in Familiarity
Despite the challenges, I’m grateful for the experience. It reminded me of the importance of my small social groups, tiny work family, and relatively subdued social life. I cherish the fact that each month brings new weather and opportunities to explore. As I return home, I’m eager to walk through Harlem and SoHo, taking in the sights and sounds of my beloved city.
The Power of Partnership
My partner, Lauren, has been a rock throughout this journey. We spent 11 days together, and our partnership allowed us to navigate the ups and downs of the trip. I’m reminded that business, like life, is so much easier when shared with someone who has your back.
VidCon: A Community of Creativity
At VidCon, we were swept up in a whirlwind of panels, meetings, and parties. I was struck by the kindness and inclusivity of the Ecogeek/Green Bros team, who welcomed us with open arms. We were fortunate to spend time with Caitlin of SciShow and Matt, who directs and edits our channel. Their warmth and expertise were a balm to our souls.
Lessons Learned
From VidCon, I took away several valuable lessons. Firstly, it’s essential to surround yourself with kind and understanding people who allow you to be human. Secondly, comparing yourself to others can be detrimental; instead, focus on growing on your own terms. Finally, enthusiasm and passion are contagious, and we should all strive to find joy in our work and hobbies.
A New Chapter
As I look to the future, I’m committed to throwing myself into my passions with renewed energy. I want to broaden my definition of “what I love” every day, embracing new experiences and hobbies. The goal is simple: to work harder, give more, and find excitement in every aspect of my life.
