Embracing the Unconventional: How I Learned to Thrive in a Non-Traditional Job
As someone who’s never fit into the traditional 9-to-5 mold, I’ve had to adapt to a unique lifestyle. My jobs, which include nannying, yoga instruction, and writing, often blur the lines between work and personal life. But it’s a trade-off I’m happy to make, as I get to do what I love every day.
Living a Double Life
My role as a nanny is anything but ordinary. With a flight attendant as my employer, I often find myself playing mom overnight, multiple times a week. This means juggling two homes – mine and theirs – and living out of an overnight bag. It can be overwhelming, but I’ve learned to make it work.
The Struggle is Real
One of the biggest challenges I face is separating my work and personal life. With the freedom to create my own schedule comes the risk of procrastination and anxiety. I’ve had to develop strategies to stay productive and focused, even when I’m not in a traditional office setting.
Finding Balance
To maintain a healthy lifestyle, I’ve implemented a few key changes:
Making Work Feel Like Home
I used to dread overnights, but I’ve learned to make the most of them. By duplicating my essential items, I can leave them at the house where I work, making it feel more like home. It’s a small change, but it’s made a big difference in my mental state.
Scheduling Myself
When I have days off from nannying, I treat them like regular workdays. I schedule myself from 9-to-5, ensuring I stay on top of my other work commitments. This helps me avoid procrastination and maintain a sense of structure.
Embracing My Unconventional Life
I’ve learned to stop comparing myself to others and accept my unique situation. I remind myself that everyone has their own challenges, and mine are just different. By embracing my non-traditional lifestyle, I’ve found a sense of freedom and contentment.
By implementing these strategies, I’ve been able to thrive in my unconventional job. It’s not always easy, but it’s worth it to do what I love every day.
