Rebooting After a Weekend of Financial Faux Pas
After a relaxing weekend getaway, I found myself struggling to get back into the swing of things. Unfortunately, my carefree vacation mode carried over into my workweek, leading to some costly mistakes. Here are the four financial blunders I made from Saturday to Tuesday – and how I plan to avoid them in the future.
Laziness Strikes Again
On Saturday, I splurged on an expensive Uber ride despite the high fare. A beautiful night in Boston turned into a rainy mess, and I opted for convenience over common sense. Instead of walking or waiting for the rain to subside, I let laziness take over. Next time, I’ll plan ahead and suck it up – my wallet will thank me.
Caffeine Craze
Sunday was a coffee-filled day, with three separate purchases adding up to a hefty total. I could have stuck to my morning coffee at home or settled for the free hotel coffee. But Vacation Mary was in full swing, and I indulged in my coffee snobbery. From now on, I’ll be brewing my coffee at home to avoid unnecessary expenses.
Treats and Temptations
On Monday, I treated the kids I nanny to Starbucks, which wouldn’t have been a big deal if I hadn’t forgotten to grab the cash set aside for such expenses. My laziness and desire to avoid conflict led to a $10 dent in my pocket. Going forward, I’ll be firmer with my “no”s and more mindful of the funds available for treats.
The Cost of Procrastination
Tuesday brought another financial setback: missing the return date on a rented textbook. A simple oversight resulted in a $10 extra charge. To avoid this mistake in the future, I’ll make sure to write down return dates on all my calendars and even tape a reminder inside the book itself. No more unnecessary fees for me!
