The Worth of Free Work: A Freelancer’s Dilemma
As a soon-to-be graduate, I’m grappling with the job market, trying to determine what kind of work is worth my time and energy. As an aspiring writer, I’ve learned that getting published often means starting at the bottom, submitting articles wherever possible, and hoping for a chance to be heard. I’ve been fortunate to land a paid internship, but I know that’s not always the case.
The Debate Rages On
The question of whether to work for free is a contentious one. Some argue that unpaid internships and free work are essential for gaining experience, while others believe they take advantage of young professionals. I recently stumbled upon a Forbes article by John Rampton, which shed light on the implications of freelancers taking on free work. Rampton argues that working for free can be worth it, but only in certain situations.
When to Take the Leap
Rampton suggests that new freelancers can find low-paying gigs to gain experience, such as blogging for $25 per post or translating for $30 per hour. He also advises working for free if the client is someone you want to impress, like your mother (because, let’s face it, she gave birth to you!). However, he warns against taking on free work for companies that can afford to pay but refuse to. This resonates with me, as I believe unpaid internships can be exploitative.
Setting Boundaries
While accepting some unpaid gigs can be beneficial, there are limits to what you should do. A one-off project to build your portfolio is different from an ongoing internship that expects you to perform full-time tasks without compensation. It’s essential to establish your worth and know when to draw the line.
Defining Worth
Ultimately, whether working for free is “worth it” depends on your personal definition of worth and the situation. As a freelancer, exposure from certain platforms might make working for free a worthwhile investment. But as a student trying to gain professional experience, I believe you deserve to be compensated in some way.
