From Hobby to Career: My Unconventional Path to Becoming a Content Writer

From Passion to Profession: My Journey as a Content Writer

As a child, I was always fascinated by the world of words. I spent hours scribbling in my journal, crafting stories, and writing book reports for fun. Little did I know that this passion would one day become my profession.

Taking the Leap

In November 2015, I landed my first paid writing gig through LinkedIn. The company was looking for content creators for their pre-launch phase, and I saw this as an opportunity to take the leap and turn my dream into a reality. Although the initial agreement was for unpaid work, I knew that if I wanted to kickstart my writing career, I had to take the chance.

The Reality Check

Fast forward to today, and I’ve learned that content writing isn’t all glamour and excitement. Most of my articles are designed to be light-hearted and easy to read, with the goal of generating clicks and engagement. While it’s not the dreamy, research-intensive writing I had envisioned, I’ve found ways to balance my creative needs. I make sure to pitch topics that allow me to learn and grow as a writer, alongside the more viral content.

Overcoming Obstacles

The journey hasn’t been without its challenges. I’ve had to learn about formatting, Search Engine Optimization, and photo editing software to create engaging featured images. Sometimes, editors change their minds about formatting or linking, and I’ve had to adapt quickly. But the biggest hurdle has been finding the time to write. With a full-time job and other commitments, it’s essential to schedule dedicated time for writing.

The Importance of Scheduling

I’ve learned that setting aside specific times for writing is crucial. I devote one night a week to writing, and I treat it like an appointment with myself. I clear my workspace, make a cup of tea, and get into the zone. By doing so, I’ve become more productive and efficient in my writing.

Team Dynamics and Communication

As a freelancer, I’m my own boss, but I still need to communicate effectively with my team. Since we’re not physically together, it’s vital to ask questions and clarify any doubts. Open and honest communication has been key to our success.

Seeking Challenges and Opportunities

Writing viral content can be monotonous at times, but I’ve found ways to challenge myself and stay motivated. I focus on building my portfolio and improving my skills with each article. I’ve also taken on more challenging topics to push myself as a writer.

The Payoff

While my writing career isn’t exactly what I had imagined, I’ve found joy in the process. The paychecks may not be lavish, but they’re a step in the right direction. I’m proud to be building my portfolio, improving my skills, and earning a side income that allows me to invest in my future.

As I look back on my journey, I realize that turning my passion into a profession has been worth the effort. It may not be glamorous, but it’s mine, and I’m excited to see where it takes me next.
