Prioritizing Travel on a Limited Budget
As a young adult, I made a promise to myself to explore new destinations at least once a year. Despite earning a modest income, I’ve managed to keep this promise, traveling to Guatemala, England, Ireland, and across the United States.
The Financial Reality
Many people assume that traveling requires a hefty paycheck. While it’s true that travel demands time, money, and planning, I believe that it’s possible to prioritize travel on a limited budget. In my case, I’ve had to juggle debt repayment, savings, and financial independence while still making time for adventure.
My Financial Journey
To put things into perspective, I’ve never earned more than $32,000 in a year. In fact, my income was as low as $15,000 in 2014. Despite these modest earnings, I’ve paid off my student loans, built a sizeable emergency fund, and maxed out my IRA for the past two years.
Why Travel Matters
So, why do I prioritize travel despite my financial constraints? For me, travel is a passion that enhances my life, rather than a distraction from it. I’ve learned to save diligently and live frugally, which allows me to allocate funds for travel without compromising my long-term financial goals.
Traveling on a Shoestring
When I was paying off debt, I opted for budget-friendly travel options within the United States. I drove instead of flying, camped instead of staying in hotels, and took shorter trips. By being mindful of my expenses, I was able to stay on track with my debt repayment goals while still exploring new destinations.
Making Travel Accessible
I firmly believe that travel shouldn’t be reserved for the wealthy. While finding the time to plan a trip can be challenging, money doesn’t have to be a roadblock. By setting aside small amounts each month, even those on a tiny salary can make their travel dreams a reality.
Start Saving Today
If you’re eager to start exploring, I recommend setting up a dedicated travel fund. Even small, regular deposits can add up over time. When the opportunity to travel arises, you’ll be grateful to have a nest egg waiting for you.
