Sustaining a Dream: The Journey to Independent Funding

As a media company, we’ve always grappled with the question of how to sustain ourselves while maintaining our core values. We refused to compromise on quality by churning out subpar content or gaming SEO to boost ad revenue. Instead, we focused on building a community that shares our passion for financial literacy.

A Humble Beginning

We were fortunate to receive a grant from Hank and John Green, which helped us get off the ground. Since then, we’ve explored various revenue streams, including sponsored content, book sales, and partnerships with like-minded clients. While we’re not rolling in wealth, we’ve managed to increase our freelance budget and maintain our independence.

Growing with Integrity

Our community has been instrumental in our growth, and we’re grateful for their support. We considered a subscription model or Patreon, but ultimately decided against it. We believe that financial literacy should be accessible to everyone, regardless of their ability to pay. Instead, we opted for a shop, where our community can purchase beautiful products while supporting our mission.

The Birth of the TFD Shop

Our talented designer, Lauren, has created a range of stunning products, from mugs to downloadable prints to totes. Using Shopify, we can focus on designing new products each month without the hassle of inventory management. Our first batch of products is now live, and we’re excited to feature new items regularly.
