Embracing the Freedom of Freelancing
I never thought I’d become a full-time freelancer. In fact, I associated freelancing with artists who couldn’t hold down a “real” job. But life had other plans. After graduating from college, I found myself working in a marketing company, only to discover that my role was being relocated to a different city. That’s when I took the leap and started freelancing.
A Happy Accident
My entry into freelancing was accidental, but it’s been a game-changer. I was lucky to have a colleague who suggested I try freelancing, and I’ll always be grateful for that advice. It’s allowed me to work on projects I love, choose my own hours, and enjoy the freedom that comes with being my own boss.
The Challenges of Breaking In
Of course, breaking into freelancing isn’t easy. It takes hard work, determination, and a willingness to learn. I’ve had friends ask me for advice on how to get started, and I’m happy to share my experiences.
Essential Tools for Freelancers
To succeed as a freelancer, you’ll need a few essential tools. Here are some of the most important ones:
- A dedicated workspace: Having a dedicated workspace can help you stay focused and productive. Even if it’s just a corner of your apartment, make sure it’s tailored to your needs.
- A list of haunts (and backups): Identify your favorite coffee shops, libraries, and other public spaces where you can work. And always have a backup plan in case your primary spot is unavailable.
- An accountant or accounting software: Self-employment taxes can be daunting, but having an accountant or using accounting software like QuickBooks Self-Employed can make a big difference.
- An organizational system: Use a tool like Evernote, Asana, or a bullet journal to stay organized and on top of your tasks.
- A healthy portfolio: Build a portfolio that showcases your work, and use platforms like Contently or Journo Portfolio to make it easy to share with potential clients.
- Follow-through: Your reputation as a freelancer is crucial, so make sure you deliver high-quality work and follow through on your commitments.
- A printer or printing service: You’ll be surprised how often you need to print or scan documents as a freelancer. Invest in a printer or use a printing service like FedEx Office.
The Rewards of Freelancing
Freelancing isn’t for everyone, but for those who thrive in this environment, it can be incredibly rewarding. I love the freedom to choose my own projects, work from home, and make my own hours. Of course, there are challenges, but the benefits far outweigh them.
Taking the Leap
If you’re considering freelancing, I encourage you to take the leap. It may not be easy, but with the right tools and mindset, you can succeed. And who knows, you might just find that it’s the best decision you’ve ever made.
