Finding Purpose in Uncertainty
The 2016 election season was a tumultuous time for many, but for me, it was a catalyst for change. As an Afro-Latinx individual, I felt the weight of uncertainty and fear for the lives of those I care about. The sense of betrayal was palpable, and it affected every aspect of my life.
A New Path Unfolds
In the midst of this turmoil, I discovered a new passion – creating art that spoke to my values and beliefs. I started designing feminist enamel pins, which became a way for me to express myself and connect with others who shared my concerns. This newfound hobby eventually led to the creation of my company, GRL TRBL.
Lessons Learned
Through this journey, I’ve learned several valuable lessons that have helped me grow both personally and professionally.
Embracing Hobbies
I used to think hobbies were frivolous, but now I realize they can be a source of empowerment. My passion for digital art, which I’ve nurtured since I was 17, has become a marketable skill. It’s essential to invest time in activities that bring you joy and fulfillment.
The Power of Yes
Saying “yes” to opportunities and collaborations has opened doors to new connections and experiences. It’s allowed me to meet like-minded individuals and use my art for good. By saying “yes,” I’ve been able to make a positive impact and build meaningful relationships.
Collaboration is Key
While I started GRL TRBL alone, I soon realized that I needed help to succeed. My best friend stepped in as COO, bringing her organizational skills and business acumen to the table. Together, we’ve been able to navigate the challenges of running a business.
Breaking Free from Comparison
As a writer, I used to compare myself to others, which led to feelings of inadequacy. However, starting GRL TRBL helped me focus on my own strengths and weaknesses. I’ve learned to appreciate my unique skills and style, rather than comparing myself to others.
Continuing Education
Investing in continuing education has been instrumental in refining my skills and taking my art to the next level. Courses in Illustrator and Photoshop have given me the confidence to experiment and push boundaries.
The Importance of Stability
Having a day job has provided me with financial stability and security, allowing me to pursue my passion project without undue stress. It’s essential to have a safety net, especially when starting a new venture.
Art as Salvation
Creating art has given me a sense of purpose and autonomy during uncertain times. It’s allowed me to connect with others and build a community around shared values. I encourage everyone to explore their creative side and make something that brings them joy.
