Embracing the Not-So-Glamorous Side of Summer
While many people can’t wait for summer to arrive, I’m not exactly thrilled about it. Don’t get me wrong, I love the idea of sipping fruity cocktails, enjoying weekend getaways, and basking in the sunshine. However, for me, the negatives far outweigh the positives.
Growing Up in the South
I spent my childhood in the South, where air conditioning was a must-have, and summer meant staying indoors. I’d often find myself cooped up on the couch, guzzling diet Coke and avoiding the sweltering heat. Even though I loved the changing seasons, I dreamed of moving to a place with shorter summers and snowy winters – which is why I ended up attending college in Vermont.
Summer Struggles in the City
Now that I live in a city where air conditioning is a luxury, I’ve come to dislike summer even more. The sticky months seem to drag on forever, and the thought of stepping onto a hot, crowded subway platform is unbearable. But, since I can’t exactly hide from the heat, I’ve learned to invest in a few essential items to make summer more bearable.
Summer Essentials
If you’re like me and struggle to cope with the heat, here are some must-haves to add to your summer survival kit:
1. Makeup Setting Spray (or Thermal Water)
Sweaty makeup is the worst. Setting spray or thermal water can help keep your face looking fresh and calm, even on the most humid days.
2. Blotting Sheets
Oily skin? Blotting sheets are your new best friend. They’re a lifesaver on hot, humid days when you need to keep your skin looking and feeling fresh.
3. Breezy Dresses
Ditch the tight-fitting skirts and dresses and opt for breezy, comfortable alternatives. Not only will you stay cool, but you’ll also avoid thigh chafing (yes, it’s a real thing!).
4. Bike Shorts (or Spandex-y Shorts)
Wearing bike shorts under your dress can be a game-changer. No more embarrassing moments when the wind blows your skirt up, and no more uncomfortable thigh chafing.
5. Baby Powder
This versatile product is a summer must-have. Use it to prevent chafing, as a dry shampoo substitute, or to dry out sweaty areas.
6. Insulated Water Bottle
Ditch the single-use plastic water bottles and invest in an insulated water bottle instead. Not only is it eco-friendly, but it’ll also keep your drinks cold for hours.
7. Mini Fan
Don’t be afraid to carry a mini fan with you. It’s a small price to pay for staying cool and comfortable during outdoor activities.
8. Actual Fan
If you’re lucky enough to have air conditioning, use it sparingly to avoid racking up your electricity bill. Instead, opt for a fan, which is a more cost-effective way to stay cool.
9. Hair Clips
Summer is the perfect excuse to ditch the blow dryer and let your hair air-dry. Use hair clips to keep your locks out of your face and off your neck.
10. Good Sunscreen
Last but not least, don’t forget to slather on that sunscreen. It’s one of the easiest ways to protect your skin from the harsh summer sun.
By investing in these summer essentials, you’ll be better equipped to handle the heat and make the most of your summer.
