Finding Unexpected Opportunities in the Entertainment Industry
As a struggling college student in New York City, I thought I had hit a dead end in my search for a part-time job. Repeatedly ghosted by restaurants, I began to lose hope. But little did I know, my passion for acting would lead me to an unconventional yet lucrative summer side gig.
Discovering Central Casting
A friend introduced me to Central Casting, an agency specializing in background work for TV and movie productions. With no auditions or interviews required, I simply signed up and showed up. It’s a no-brainer, especially considering the high demand for extras in NYC during the summer months.
Flexibility and Freedom
What I love most about background work is the flexibility it offers. I create my own schedule by submitting myself for projects that fit my availability. With Casting Networks, I have access to a constant stream of potential projects, and the initial investment has paid off tenfold.
The Life of an Extra
While waiting on set can be tedious, I’ve learned to use this downtime to my advantage. I catch up on acting theory, write, and even get some reading done. It’s a unique opportunity to work on my creative goals while earning a steady income. And let’s not forget the perks – copious amounts of food, including gourmet-level meals that would put any NYC college student’s culinary dreams to shame.
Networking and Supplementing Income
Background work has also provided me with a chance to network with fellow performers and meet new people from all walks of life. I’ve even met a Kindergarten teacher who moonlights as an extra during the summer! It’s a great way to supplement your income or support yourself while working on other projects.
The Ups and Downs
Of course, the hours can be unpredictable, and the waiting can be grueling. But for me, the benefits far outweigh the drawbacks. Doing background work has been a lifesaver this summer, and I’m proud to say I’ve made it onto TV and movie sets alongside some big-name stars.
Embracing the Unexpected
In the end, I learned that sometimes the best opportunities come from unexpected places. By embracing the unconventional, I’ve found a way to pursue my passion while supporting myself in the city that never sleeps.
