Mastering the Art of Moving: 7 Times the Charm
After seven moves in just four years, I’ve learned a thing or two about making the process as smooth as possible. From planning to unpacking, I’ve developed strategies to keep my sanity, wallet, and back intact.
The Importance of Planning
Before diving into the chaos of moving, take a step back and create a comprehensive plan. I swear by spreadsheets, dividing them into two categories: to-do and services. Update your address with the DMV, USPS, banks, and online shopping sites. Schedule appliance deliveries, utility installations, and don’t forget to clean your new place before moving in.
Boxing Up
Get creative with boxes! Visit your local liquor store and ask for spare boxes. They’re perfect for protecting fragile items, and you’ll earn a reputation for moving in with a stash of “liquor.” Don’t forget to grab packing cardboard while you’re at it.
Packing Like a Pro
Pack in stages, starting three days before the move. Group items that can protect each other, like wrapping glassware in soft fabrics. Label essentials like cat supplies and cabinet liners, and set them aside for easy access on moving day.
The Big Move
If you’re comfortable renting a truck and enlisting friends’ help, you’re off to a great start. Otherwise, research local moving companies and get quotes in writing to avoid surprise costs. Don’t forget to thank your friends with beer and gratitude!
Unpacking Bliss
Once you’ve settled into your new space, prioritize unpacking the kitchen and getting settled. Start with cabinet liners and scissors, then break open the rest of the boxes. Take breaks, order a pizza, and remember to treat yourself to a well-deserved massage afterwards.
By following these tips, you’ll be well on your way to a stress-free move. Happy relocating!
