Navigating the Uncertain Path: Turning Your Degree into a Career

Many of us have been there – investing years in a degree program, only to wonder what it will translate to in the real world. While some may have a clear vision of their future, others, like myself, enter a major with a vague idea of what lies ahead.

The Question Mark Degree

I pursued a communication major, often told that it was a versatile degree, but also a question mark. Professors and mentors would offer suggestions, but I remained unsure about my post-grad life. It turns out, I wasn’t alone. Many of my peers shared similar experiences, yet they all managed to find their way.

Finding Your Path

To better understand how to make a degree work, I spoke with seven individuals who successfully translated their college degrees into fulfilling careers.

Isabel: From Communication to Event Planning

Isabel, a communication major, focused on organizational communication, thinking it would lead to a career in management. However, an internship in event planning revealed her true passion. She now works full-time as an event planner, utilizing skills acquired during her studies.

Erin: From English to Copywriting

Erin, an English major, initially thought she’d pursue a career in teaching. But after freelancing as a copywriter and working as an editor, she discovered her true calling. Her passion for words and grammar paired perfectly with the skills she developed during her time as an English major.

Liz: From Biology to Teaching

Liz studied biology, intending to become a nurse. However, she soon realized medicine wasn’t her calling. She became a teacher, and later, a biology professor at her alma mater. Her “vague” degree led her to a fulfilling career in education.

Kendra: From Photography to Creative Direction

Kendra, a photography major, didn’t become a photographer. Instead, her artistic eye and experience with digital media landed her a job as an assistant creative director – a role she never knew existed.

Nick: From Theatre to Set Design

Nick, a theatre major, aimed to become an actor. While pursuing his dream, he worked in general operations at a local theatre and eventually landed a job in set design. His degree remains relevant, even as he continues to work towards his acting goals.

Sophie: From Electrical Engineering to IT

Sophie studied electrical engineering, unaware it would lead her to a career in IT. She’s grateful for the unexpected turn, which has brought her happiness and fulfillment.

Ben: From Computer Science to Education

Ben pursued computer science, knowing he could earn a high salary. However, he chose a more fulfilling path, becoming a high school educator, teaching computer class and robotics. His degree still relates to his work, but he prioritized happiness over financial gain.

These stories demonstrate that, with determination and creativity, anyone can turn their degree into a successful career. By identifying your strengths, exploring different fields, and pitching your skills, you can create a fulfilling professional life that aligns with your passions.
