Rediscovering the Power of Play
Growing up, I was never one for games or playful activities. My immigrant family prioritized education, business, and basic necessities over leisure time. But recent research suggests that play is essential for long-term success and mental well-being. As someone who’s always been driven to achieve, I’ve had to relearn the value of play in a way that suits my productive personality.
The Importance of Contemplative Play
As a high-achiever, I’ve often viewed play as a frivolous waste of time. But without it, my brain stays stuck in survival mode, making it difficult to find innovative solutions to problems. I need a specific kind of play – what I call “contemplative play” – to break free from this cycle.
A Childhood Without Play
I remember being asked to play a math game on a plane ride to Italy with friends. I declined, fearing I wouldn’t win or achieve a tangible outcome. Even at 19, I had already conditioned myself to prioritize productivity over joy. This mindset led me to stop trying new things and only pursue activities with a clear benefit or prize.
The Consequences of Neglecting Play
As I grew older, I became increasingly uninspired and unproductive. My analytical skills, which had served me well in my Wall Street career, began to stagnate. I felt stuck, despite outward appearances of success. I changed my goals, focusing on family, but approached it with the same rigid mindset. Life still felt unfulfilling, and I began to spread my misery to those around me.
Finding Contemplative Play
A friend suggested meditation, which I tried but eventually abandoned. I needed a more active, creative outlet to quiet my critical thoughts and tap into my imagination. I started doodling, despite my initial lack of skill. The freedom to create without judgment was exhilarating. I then began exploring movement and singing, embracing the present moment and letting go of self-criticism.
The Benefits of Contemplative Play
Through contemplative play, I’ve developed greater emotional resilience and the ability to work through uncertainty with less stress. I take regular breaks from problems, returning to them with fresh perspectives and a sense of calm. My play sessions have taught me to take small, calculated risks and find joy in the process.
