As a natural-born saver, I’ve always been mindful of my spending habits. However, after accumulating $75,000 in student loan debt, I knew I had to take my frugality to the next level. I created a bare-bones budget, cutting back on unnecessary expenses and making drastic lifestyle changes, like driving an old car and renting a room from my parents. But amidst all the belt-tightening, I’ve made room for a few indulgences that bring me immense joy and value.
Trips of a Lifetime
One of the most significant splurges I’ve made is taking two incredible trips. The first was a two-week adventure to Hawaii with my then-boyfriend’s family. Although it depleted my savings, the experience was truly once-in-a-lifetime. I worked tirelessly to replenish my funds afterward, but the memories and bonding with my partner’s family were well worth it. More recently, we embarked on a trip to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, using my in-laws’ timeshare and frequent flyer miles. It was my first time exploring the southeast, and the experience was breathtaking.
My Faithful Companion
Another indulgence I cherish is my lovable pug, adopted from a shelter. While the adoption fee, neutering surgery, and ongoing vet visits add up, having him by my side brings me daily happiness. Despite the expenses, I’ve never regretted bringing him home. His affection and companionship make every penny worthwhile.

Living in Minnesota, where harsh winters are a norm, I realized the importance of investing in reliable snow tires. After replacing my old, bald tires with new ones, I felt a significant improvement in my car’s performance and safety on the road. Although the $500 expense stung, I knew it was a necessary investment to protect myself and others on the road.

One motivator that keeps me driven to pay off my debt is the desire to give generously. I find immense satisfaction in supporting causes I care about and surprising loved ones with thoughtful gifts. Lastly, I’m grateful for the investment I made in my education. Although I might not choose to pursue a master’s degree again due to the high cost, my bachelor’s degree has opened doors to numerous opportunities and allowed me to secure a job I love.
