From Night Owl to Morning Pro: 6 Strategies to Thrive

Embracing the Dawn: A Night Owl’s Guide to Mornings

As a self-proclaimed creature of the night, I’ve always thrived in the stillness of the evening hours. My most cherished memories are made between 10 PM and 5 AM, when the world seems to slow down and conversations flow effortlessly. But, life had other plans. I landed a grown-up job that requires me to be bright-eyed and bushy-tailed by 8 AM. The horror!

Finding My Rhythm

To adapt to this new reality, I’ve had to get creative. Here are the strategies that have helped me survive – and even thrive – in the early morning hours:

1. The Sweet Spot of Sleep

I’ve learned that getting exactly 8 hours of sleep is crucial. Any more or less, and I’m a zombie. My apartment mates used to bet on how late I’d sleep in on Saturdays, but now I’m in bed by 9 PM, ready to take on the morning.

2. Streamlining My Morning

I’ve mastered the art of prep work. I cook my lunch, lay out my clothes, and pack my gym bag on Sundays. This saves me precious mental energy in the morning, when all I want to do is hit snooze.

3. Breakfast – The Unlikely Hero

As a non-coffee drinker, I’ve discovered the magic of breakfast. Refried beans, oatmeal, or fruit – anything to kick-start my body after an 8-12 hour fast. And, let’s not forget detox tea with honey and apple cider vinegar. It’s become my morning ritual.

4. Getting a Head Start

I know it sounds counterintuitive, but arriving at the office earlier than necessary has been a game-changer. The quiet atmosphere helps me transition from home mode to work mode, and it’s a great way to impress my employer.

5. Warming Up to the Day

I don’t pretend to be a morning person, but I’ve learned to ease into my day. I greet my coworkers, check my email, and make a to-do list. It’s all about setting myself up for success, even if it takes a little longer.

6. Letting Go of Grumpiness

My final tip is to release the morning grumpiness. When my cheerful coworkers bounce in, ready to tackle the day, I take a deep breath and remind myself that not everyone is half asleep. By doing so, I set myself up for a better day and make the transition to morning personhood a little easier.

By incorporating these strategies into my daily routine, I’ve managed to survive – and even thrive – in the early morning hours. And, who knows, maybe someday I’ll learn to love them too.
