Monthly Momentum: A Fresh Approach to Achieving Your Goals

Embracing a Fresh Start: A New Approach to Goal-Setting

As the calendar flipped to a new year, I felt a collective sigh of relief wash over me. The past year had been overwhelming, to say the least. I had graduated law school, started my first full-time job, and was still trying to find my footing in this new chapter of life. The excitement and optimism I felt at the beginning of the year quickly gave way to frustration and disappointment as my lofty goals fell by the wayside.

A Shift in Perspective

I realized that I needed a different approach to goal-setting. Instead of setting grand, year-long objectives, I decided to focus on smaller, more manageable goals – one month at a time. This way, I wouldn’t feel overwhelmed by the sheer scope of what I wanted to achieve.

January: Finding Balance Through Exercise

As someone who’s not naturally athletic, I knew exercise wouldn’t come easily to me. But I also knew it was essential for managing stress and maintaining overall well-being. So, I committed to establishing a solid exercise routine in January. After trying (and failing) with a high-tech exercise app, I decided to join a yoga studio – a more sustainable and enjoyable option for me.

February: Tackling Financial To-Dos

In February, I’ll focus on tackling some administrative financial tasks that have been lingering on my to-do list. This includes setting up a solid payment structure for my student loans, applying for a good credit card, refinancing my loans, and speaking with an accountant before tax season. I’ve already taken the first step by setting up monthly donations to organizations close to my heart, including Planned Parenthood, Partners in Health, and the ACLU.

March: Creating a Sense of Home

After two and a half years in my apartment, it’s finally starting to feel like home. In March, I’ll focus on finishing the last few touches, like finding the perfect print to hang over my bed and investing in a decent filing system. I’ll also tackle some pesky tasks, like getting renter’s insurance and having a conversation with my building’s super about my temperamental oven.

April: Digital Detox

In April, I’ll turn my attention to cleaning up my digital life. This means organizing my files, backing up my data, and streamlining my online presence. I’ll also take the time to unfollow people on social media who no longer bring me joy and organize my music library (if I’m feeling ambitious!).

A Sustainable Approach to Goal-Setting

By breaking down my goals into smaller, manageable chunks, I’m hoping to create a sense of sustainability and momentum. I’ll evaluate my progress in April and adjust my approach as needed. For now, I’m excited to take things one month at a time and finally feel like I’m getting on top of my life.
