Savvy Traveler’s Guide to TSA PreCheck
As a frequent flyer, I’ve learned to appreciate the little perks that make traveling more efficient. One of those perks is TSA PreCheck, a program that promises to speed up security checks at the airport. But is it worth the $85 price tag?
What is TSA PreCheck?
TSA PreCheck is a dedicated security line that allows low-risk travelers to breeze through security checks without removing their shoes, belts, or laptops from their carry-on bags. It’s a godsend for those who travel regularly, whether for business or leisure.
The Application Process
Applying for TSA PreCheck is a breeze. The online application takes around 5-10 minutes to complete, and you’ll need to provide basic personal information, criminal history, and passport details. After submitting your application, you’ll wait for approval, which typically takes around two weeks. Once approved, you’ll schedule an in-person interview, where you’ll pay the non-refundable fee and confirm your information.
My First Impressions
I was excited to try out TSA PreCheck on my trip to Iceland. Unfortunately, my terminal didn’t have a PreCheck line, so I had to go through regular security. On my next trip to Las Vegas, I was able to use the PreCheck line, but it was surprisingly slow. My first two experiences with PreCheck were underwhelming, to say the least.
The Pros and Cons
Pro: Long-Term Benefits
One of the biggest advantages of TSA PreCheck is that it lasts for five years, making the investment well worth it for frequent travelers.
Con: Limited Availability
Not all airports or terminals have PreCheck lines, which can be a major disappointment. Be sure to check before your flight to plan accordingly.
Pro: More Flexibility
With PreCheck, I can leave for the airport later, knowing that security won’t be a bottleneck.
Con: Customs Still Applies
While PreCheck is great for domestic flights, it doesn’t exempt you from customs lines when flying internationally. Consider investing in Global Entry for an additional $15 to avoid these lines.
Is It Worth It?
For me, TSA PreCheck has been a mixed bag. While it’s nice to skip some security steps, the lines can still be long, and not all airports have PreCheck lines. If you travel frequently and often fly out of airports with PreCheck lines, it may be worth the investment. But do your research and weigh the pros and cons carefully.
