The Harsh Reality of Impulsive Decisions
When I was 20, I thought I knew it all. I was in my second year of university, juggling a demanding course load with a part-time job to make ends meet. But after a breakup, I felt suffocated and needed a change. That’s when I stumbled upon an ad for overseas au pairs on Facebook. Without much thought, I applied for a position in Germany and booked my tickets just three days later.
A Decision Made in Haste
Looking back, I realize I didn’t consider the financial implications of my decision. I had already planned a trip to Vietnam the following summer, which would drain my savings. And despite receiving board, food, and visas from my host family, my monthly stipend of 270 Euros was barely enough to cover my expenses. I arrived in Germany broke, feeling isolated and depressed, with my host parents going through a separation.
The Consequences of Impulsiveness
My five months in Germany were marked by reckless spending, exhaustion, and a sense of entitlement. I took out a loan from my parents, amounting to thousands of dollars, which I knew I’d have to pay back. To make matters worse, I forgot to cancel my phone contract before leaving Germany, resulting in a staggering $800 AUD ($601.23 USD) in interest ten months later.
A Valuable Lesson Learned
While my experience wasn’t all bad – I improved my German language skills, learned to take care of myself in difficult situations, and gained clarity on my career goals – I regret not understanding the value of money before making the leap. I should have been more practical and considered the financial implications of my decision.
The Importance of Pragmatism
The rhetoric around “following your passion” and seizing “once in a lifetime” opportunities often overlooks the importance of planning and financial security. As young people, we must learn to balance our desires with practicality and consider the consequences of our actions.
