Smart Wedding Planning: How One Couple Saved Thousands
When Bob Lai proposed to his girlfriend Ayoe at her 30th birthday party, he knew they had to make their wedding celebrations special – and affordable. With a bit of creativity and resourcefulness, they managed to host not one, not two, but three weddings for under $7,000.
A Global Celebration
The first wedding was a legal ceremony at a Vancouver park, which secured Ayoe’s permanent-residence status in Canada. This was followed by a reception for 40 friends and family in Vancouver, and another party in Ayoe’s home country of Denmark. Despite the multiple celebrations, the Lais kept costs remarkably low.
The Power of DIY
Ayoe, with a degree in fashion, took matters into her own hands and created her own wedding dress for each celebration, making slight modifications for each one. She also baked her own cakes and made macaroons for the third wedding. By doing things themselves, they saved a significant amount of money.
Enlisting Help from Loved Ones
The couple didn’t be afraid to ask for help from family and friends. Bob’s brother became the DJ at their second wedding, and a friend took photographs at the first wedding. The key was to be honest and respectful of their time, and not to put pressure on them.
Venue and Catering Hacks
To save on venue costs, the Lais chose community centers and school cafeterias where they could bring their own food and drinks. They also hired a local caterer who offered delicious beef short ribs at a fraction of the cost. Buying alcohol in bulk and getting a discount also helped reduce expenses.
Small Changes, Big Savings
Other cost-saving strategies included hiring a student from a beauty school to do Ayoe’s hair and makeup, and wearing a suit with different colored shirts for each wedding. These small changes added up to significant savings.
The Final Tally
Bob estimates that they saved at least $15,000 by implementing these strategies. Their story serves as a reminder that weddings don’t have to break the bank.
Advice for Budget-Conscious Couples
According to Bob, “Weddings can be as expensive or as cheap as you want. Just remember: Getting married only requires one piece of paper (the marriage certificate) and a wedding commissioner.” Focus on what truly matters – good company, good food, and a celebration that reflects your personal style.
