Getting Moving: How a Simple Step Counter Changed My Life
As I reflect on the past month, I’m thrilled to report that I’ve successfully achieved my daily step goal of 10,000 steps for 28 consecutive days. That’s over 280,000 steps, a remarkable feat that has taught me valuable lessons about habit formation, tracking, and motivation.
Streak vs. Habit: What’s the Difference?
While I’m proud of my streak, I’m cautious not to confuse it with forming a habit. Research suggests that habits can be formed in as little as 21 days, but I believe it takes more than that. I still need to make a conscious effort to overcome excuses and reasons to skip my daily goal. Until I treat my daily steps as non-negotiable, like showering or brushing my teeth, I won’t consider it a habit.
The Power of Tracking
The personal finance world knows that what gets measured gets improved. Before using a Fitbit, I estimated my steps using my iPhone, but it wasn’t accurate. Now, I realize I was averaging around 7,000 steps a day, a significant difference from my goal. This experience has convinced me of the importance of tracking my progress, whether it’s steps or finances.
Accountability: The Secret Sauce
What really motivates me is the sense of accountability that comes with sharing my progress with others. When coworkers joined me on the Fitbit community, it added an extra layer of motivation. Even though they sometimes teased me, it pushed me to take extra laps during breaks. Having an accountability partner, especially one who makes you laugh, can make all the difference.
Prioritizing Progress Over Perfection
As a self-proclaimed perfectionist, I initially wanted to excel in every aspect of the Fitbit’s metrics. But I soon realized that mastering everything at once was unrealistic. By focusing on a single goal – hitting my daily step target – I found success and learned to prioritize my efforts.
Was it Worth the Investment?
Initially hesitant to spend money on a Fitbit, I can now confidently say it was worth every penny. Not only did it help me prioritize my health, but it also taught me valuable lessons that can be applied to other areas of my life, such as finances and relationships.
