Ditching Chemicals: My Journey to Embracing Natural Beauty and Saving Big

Embracing My Natural Beauty

For the past five years, I’ve ditched the chemical relaxers and embraced my naturally kinky hair. This journey began during my freshman year of college, prompted by a bold decision to bleach my hair blonde for prom. I knew that applying a relaxer to my scalp would be disastrous, given the excessive processing my hair had already endured. The cost of maintaining straight hair was also becoming unsustainable, especially on a modest college income.

Breaking Free from Eurocentric Beauty Standards

As a college student, I spent a small fortune on hairstylists to maintain my straight locks. Every six to eight weeks, I’d visit the salon for a touch-up, shelling out $60-$80 each time. Additionally, I’d get my hair professionally washed, treated, and blow-dried weekly, which ranged from $30-$50. I eventually realized that I was conforming to societal beauty standards, believing that straight hair was necessary to be seen as “professional.” Thankfully, I’ve since learned that this notion is false and rooted in Eurocentric ideals.

Taking Control of My Hair Care

Now, I manage my natural hair at home, washing it weekly, treating and trimming it myself. The results have been remarkable – my hair is longer and thicker than ever before. Not only has my hair flourished, but I’ve also reduced my expenses significantly.

Lessons Learned

Initially, I was overwhelmed by the unfamiliar texture of my natural hair. I wasted money on numerous products, unsure of what to use. However, as I educated myself on natural hair care, I streamlined my product list and reduced my spending. As a beauty writer, I occasionally receive free samples of products, which helps minimize my expenses.

My Current Hair Care Routine

Here’s a breakdown of the products I use and their costs:

  • Viva Naturals Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil: $10.99
  • TRESemme Flawless Curls Shampoo: $5.99
  • TRESemme Flawless Curls Conditioner: $5.99
  • Miss Jessie’s Baby Buttercreme: $32.49
  • Aussie 3 Minute Miracle Moist: $2.97
  • Tropic Isle Living Jamaican Black Castor Oil: $12.20
  • Aloe Vera Gel: $3

Total: $73.36

The Cost of Natural Hair Care

While my experience has been positive, I understand that everyone’s hair care expenses will vary depending on their texture, brand preferences, and specific needs. For me, going natural has been a liberating decision, both for my self-image and my finances. I’m thrilled to have found a more affordable and empowering way to care for my hair.
