Taking the Leap: Is Pre-Marital Counseling Worth the Investment?
As I count down the days to my wedding, I’m reminded of the importance of preparing for a lifelong commitment. My fiancé, Dan, and I recently embarked on pre-marital counseling, a decision that has already brought us closer together.
Weighing the Costs
While the thought of counseling may seem daunting, it’s essential to consider the benefits. For us, it was crucial to invest in our relationship before taking the plunge. However, finding a therapist who accepts insurance can be a challenge. Be prepared to allocate a portion of your budget for this investment, and figure out what works best for you and your partner financially.
Finding the Right Fit
Once you’ve determined your budget, it’s time to find a therapist who suits your needs. We opted for an Imago therapist, whose approach focuses specifically on romantic relationships. You can use online tools like ZocDoc and Psychology Today to find a therapist in your area, filtering by insurance provider to ensure coverage.
Committing to the Process
Our therapist recommended four to five 90-minute sessions, which we scheduled in advance to ensure completion. It’s essential to prioritize these sessions and commit to the process. Remember, the work you do in therapy is just the beginning – practicing what you learn is key to growth and improvement.
Beyond the Sessions
Pre-marital counseling is not a one-time fix; it’s an ongoing process. Continue communicating your needs, practicing effective communication, and addressing concerns that arise. For us, counseling highlighted areas that require further discussion and work. I’ll be starting individual therapy soon, and we plan to continue couple’s therapy in the future.
Investing in Your Relationship
Ultimately, whether or not to invest in pre-marital counseling is a personal decision. I believe that self-work and relationship investment are always worth the cost, especially when it comes to improving your relationship and overall satisfaction. Do your research, weigh the pros and cons, and decide what works best for you and your partner.
