Embracing Change: Lessons Learned from My First Semester of College
As I reflect on my decision to leave my small town behind and embark on a new journey in college, I’m reminded that growth and transformation are often accompanied by challenges and mistakes. Now, after nearly four months of navigating this new chapter, I’ve identified key areas where I fell short and what I could have done differently.
Meal Plan Mishaps
One of my biggest regrets is not utilizing my meal plan effectively. With an unlimited meal plan at my disposal, I should have taken advantage of the four dining halls and $250 dining dollars provided. Instead, I developed a costly habit of frequenting an on-campus coffee shop, blowing through half of my dining dollars in just a month. I could have easily prepared coffee in my dorm or swiped into the dining halls to get it. This mistake taught me the importance of budgeting and making smart financial decisions.
The Importance of Diversifying Friendships
While I was fortunate to have an amazing roommate and friendly floor mates, I realize now that I should have made an effort to connect with people outside of my building. Having friends from different circles can provide a much-needed break from the intensity of college life. By not diversifying my friend circles, I risked emotional burnout and missed opportunities for new experiences and connections.
Taking Advantage of Campus Resources
College campuses offer a wealth of resources, services, and benefits designed to enhance the student experience. I regret not taking advantage of these perks, including a free gym membership, craft nights, open mics, and free therapy sessions. These resources can enrich our lives and provide valuable opportunities for growth. I’ve learned to appreciate the importance of utilizing what I pay for and making the most of my college experience.
Moving Forward with New Perspectives
As I look back on my first semester, I’m grateful for the opportunities I’ve had to grow, learn, and connect with amazing people. However, I’ve also come to realize the importance of self-reflection and auditing my life at key junctures. By acknowledging my mistakes and identifying areas for improvement, I can set tangible goals and adopt new habits to make the most of my college experience. College is a time for learning, growth, and transformation – and I’m committed to using it to become the best version of myself.
