Embracing the Power of Green Beauty
Growing up, I struggled with problem skin, which led me to test a multitude of products and treatments. My mom, a beauty enthusiast, would collect samples and kindly pass them along to me. Over the years, I’ve tried over 200 brands from around the world, including the U.S., U.K., Japan, Korea, France, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.
The Misleading World of Skincare
Brands often promote an elaborate skincare regimen, claiming it’s necessary for the “full effect.” However, I’ve come to realize that this is just a clever marketing ploy to get consumers to buy more. I’ve fallen victim to this tactic, believing that a 10-step beauty routine was necessary for flawless skin. But in reality, it’s often more about addressing my own insecurities than the actual effectiveness of the products.
A Game-Changing Discovery
Two years ago, I stumbled upon a book that revolutionized my approach to beauty and self-care: No More Dirty Looks by Siobhan O’Connor and Alexandra Spunt. This book exposed the harsh truths behind the beauty industry’s polished facade, revealing the importance of using products with zero fillers and only carefully chosen, clean active ingredients.
The Dangers of Fillers
Fillers can come in many forms, including pore-clogging silicones like Dimethicone and Cyclohexasiloxane, which can cause cystic acne. Parabens and preservatives can also cause skin irritation, leading to redness, blotchiness, and swelling. Mainstream brands often list actives at the end of the ingredient list, indicating that there’s very little of them in the product itself.
My Journey to Green Beauty
Armed with my newfound knowledge, I made it my mission to carefully scrutinize every purchase I considered. I now use only one product line for face, body, and hair: Everyday Coconut. Each product has fewer than five ingredients, all derived from nature. I also use Trilogy’s Rosehip Oil, which has been a game-changer for my skin.
My Favorite Green Beauty Products
- Kiss My Face Triple Action Fluoride-free Toothpaste: At $4.99 per tube, it lasts me six months.
- Kari Gran Three Sixty Five Organic Sunscreen: I replenish it about twice a year, and it costs $48.
- Stark Skincare’s City Recalibrating Face Oil: Ideal for cold and windy weather, this treatment is moisturizing without being greasy.
- Skinowl’s Maqui Berry Beauty Drops: Rich yet non-comedogenic, this oil is perfect for those needing serious moisture.
The Power of Independent, Female-Owned Businesses
One of the reasons I’m passionate about green beauty is that it supports small, independent businesses run by women. All the products mentioned in this article are created by women who are dedicated to providing healthier, more sustainable options.
A Brighter Future for Beauty
As we become more aware of the importance of green beauty, we can expect to see more innovative and healthier alternatives emerge. The rise of greener options is a huge step forward, empowering women to take control of their beauty routines and create products that truly benefit their skin and hair.
