Breaking Free from the Salaried Grind
As I reflect on my journey since graduating from college, I realize how fortunate I’ve been to have had a steady income. But beneath the surface, I was suffocating under the weight of a salaried job. The comfort of a predictable paycheck came at a steep price: my freedom, creativity, and work-life balance.
The Illusion of Security
My first job out of college was a dream come true. I worked at the University of Oregon’s Brain Development Lab, earning a respectable $28,000 salary. The perks were enticing – four weeks of paid vacation, comprehensive health insurance, and a comfortable work-life balance. However, I soon discovered that the public sector wasn’t for me, and my passion for food blogging and cooking left me feeling unfulfilled.
The Restaurant Industry: A Wake-Up Call
When my boyfriend got a job in Portland, I took the opportunity to pursue a career in the restaurant industry. Despite having no experience, I landed a salaried gig as an assistant manager at an Italian restaurant, earning over $10,000 more than my previous job. But the long hours, lack of overtime pay, and constant availability took a toll on my personal life. I realized that a salary didn’t guarantee financial security or a healthy work-life balance.
The Digital Marketing Rollercoaster
After a year of searching, I transitioned into digital marketing, a field I was passionate about. My first job as a Digital Marketing Specialist at a local startup brought a sense of relief, but it wasn’t long before I felt overwhelmed. The startup culture meant being constantly connected, working long hours, and shouldering immense responsibility. I was doing the work of three people, and the stress was taking a toll on my mental and physical health.
The Part-Time Solution
When the restaurant I previously worked for offered me a part-time marketing position, I was hesitant at first. No benefits, no paid leave, and hourly pay seemed like a step backward. But after careful consideration, I decided to take the leap. The position offered a great hourly rate, flexible hours, and the opportunity to focus on my side hustles. I negotiated a higher rate, and my paychecks were bigger than they were when I was salaried.
The Power of Time and Freedom
In my part-time role, I feel more in control of my time and energy. I’ve expanded my freelance marketing side hustle, blog consistently, and even written a cookbook. My work-life balance is finally in check, and I don’t come home from work feeling drained. I’ve learned to appreciate the flexibility and autonomy that comes with being hourly.
A Third Option for Side-Hustlers
Many side-hustlers believe they have only two options: a full-time corporate job or going solo. But there’s a third option – going part-time in a field that complements your side hustle. This approach offers a safety net, allowing you to maintain your skills and credibility while pursuing your passions.
I’m grateful for the journey that led me to this realization. By embracing the unknown and taking control of my time, I’ve found a sense of freedom and fulfillment that I never thought possible.
