Finding Happiness in the Darkest of Times
As I reflect on my college days, I’m reminded of the struggles I faced and the lessons I learned. I was just 18, attending Towson University, and eager to start my journey. But little did I know, those four years would be a rollercoaster of emotions.
A Freshman’s Struggle
I was undecided, taking general studies classes that left me uninspired. Math was a nightmare, and my SAT scores were a constant reminder of my weaknesses. The campus culture was unfamiliar, and I felt like an outsider among the sorority girls and Trump supporters. Despite having friends from my hometown, I felt isolated and alone.
The Dark Days
Sophomore year was a turning point. I experienced heartbreak and sexual assault, which changed me from a carefree person to a troubled and anxious individual. The environment at school was uninviting, and despite my friends’ support, I felt suffocated. I’d often escape to my hometown, trying to flee from my college life. I hated the constant judgment, the cliques, and the feeling of being trapped.
A Turning Point
Before my junior year, I tried to transfer to my dream school, but financial constraints held me back. That’s when I realized that running away wasn’t the solution. I needed to take responsibility for my life, my mistakes, and my failures. I needed to keep going, for my own sake.
Finding Happiness
So, how did I do it?
Getting Out of Bed
I forced myself to leave my comfort zone, to attend classes, and to engage with people. It wasn’t easy, but with the help of teachers and friends, I began to see the light.
Letting Go of Expectations
I released the pressure of meeting others’ expectations and focused on being myself. I stopped trying to fit into the mold of a perfect student or a perfect person. I found authenticity and honesty, and that’s when I started to connect with like-minded individuals.
Making a Difference
I volunteered, rallied with sexual assault survivors, and met people from diverse backgrounds. I stepped out of my comfort zone and found purpose in contributing to the world.
Seeking Help
Therapy became a crucial part of my journey. It wasn’t a magic solution, but it helped me gain perspective and shed the weight of my problems.
Letting Go of Toxic People
I distanced myself from negative influences, including friends who brought me down. It was a difficult process, but it was necessary for my growth and healing.
You Are Not Alone
College can be tough, but it gets better. You’ll find your tribe, your lifelong friends, and your sense of purpose. Don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone, talk to strangers, and keep an open heart and mind. Remember your worth, and never forget that you are capable of overcoming any obstacle.
