Unlock the Power of Planning: How Embracing My Personality Type Transformed My Productivity

Embracing the Power of Planning

As someone who’s always been drawn to the idea of using a planner, I’ve tried various systems over the years, but none stuck until I discovered my planner-friendly personality type.

Discovering My Planner-Friendly Personality Type

After reading Gretchen Rubin’s book Better Than Before, I learned that I’m a “Questioner,” meaning I respond best to internal accountability. This insight has been instrumental in understanding why I’ve struggled with traditional planners in the past.

Why Bullet Journaling Didn’t Work For Me

Initially, bullet journaling seemed like the perfect solution for a Questioner like me, offering complete customization and flexibility. However, I found it required too much time and attention, making it feel rigid and unspontaneous. My bullet journal became a chore, rather than a helpful tool.

Why My “Normal” Planner Works Better

I started using a traditional weekly planner at the beginning of the year, initially to track my exercise routine. Writing down my plans made them feel more like obligations, and I soon found myself using the planner for everything else too. This system has helped me stay on track with my savings goals, plan vacations, and even schedule self-care activities.

Planning Ahead = Making More Room For Fun

Getting to know myself better has taught me that I take more pleasure in planning than in spontaneous decisions. Writing down my plans makes them feel more real, and I get to enjoy the anticipation leading up to them. Planning ahead doesn’t suck the joy out of things; it enhances them.

Using Scheduling As Stress Relief

Planning ahead also means preparing for less enjoyable tasks, like doctor’s appointments and networking events. However, having a system in place reduces stress and anxiety. By scheduling tasks, I can free up mental energy and focus on enjoying my life.

The Power of Habit

As Gretchen Rubin says, “Habits make change possible by freeing us from decision making and from using self-control.” My planner habit has become second nature, allowing me to hold myself accountable without exerting extra effort. It’s not about trying harder; it’s about having to try less. By embracing planning, I’ve found a sense of freedom and enjoyment that I never thought possible.
