Ditching the Dream Job: How I Found Freedom in Following My Passion

Embracing a New Path: Leaving Behind a Dream Job

Education has always been a vital part of my life. It was my escape from a tumultuous home life during college, and later, it became a passion I thought I’d dedicate my life to. However, after landing a teaching gig and eventually transitioning to the art department, I realized that the reality of teaching wasn’t what I had envisioned.

The Reality of Teaching

Instead of focusing on education, I found myself caught up in politics and numbers. Graduation rates and metrics took precedence over learning, and I was forced to “adjust my standards.” This intense conflict led me to question my role as a teacher. I wanted to help students find their voice, create every day, and take risks, but the system wasn’t allowing me to do so.

Burnout and Self-Reflection

After five years of teaching, I felt burnt out, unsafe, isolated, and disrespected. I took time to reflect on my priorities and values, reading books like “Your Money or Your Life” and “Work Optional.” I realized I wanted to make money from my creations, not just a paycheck. I wanted to be a writer, designer, and photographer, using my skills to make a difference.

Taking the Leap

I started rebuilding my photography side hustle, writing guest posts, and eventually landed my first freelancing gig. As my confidence grew, so did my business. My partner was supportive, and together, we crunched the numbers, deciding that quitting teaching was a viable option. We had funded our emergency funds, and our combined finances would be enough to sustain us.

Overcoming Fear and Guilt

Leaving a “good job” wasn’t easy. I faced fear of the unknown, fear of not making it, and fear of being a quitter. There was also guilt about letting my students down. However, I realized that these fears were rooted in shame and obligation. I dared to quit, to prioritize my own well-being and pursue my passions.

A New Chapter

I’m now a freelancer and founder of the His and Her FI blog, where I advocate for transparency and conversations about money. I believe that taking control of our finances is essential to living a fulfilling life. When I’m not working, you can find me hiking, traveling, and taking photographs. I’m proud to have taken the leap, and I hope my story inspires others to do the same.
