The Unconventional Path to Studying Abroad
For many, studying abroad is a major draw when choosing a college. It’s a chance to explore new cultures, gain valuable life experience, and enhance your resume. I was no exception. As a transfer student, I was excited to explore the world beyond my campus. However, as I delved deeper into the process, I realized that studying abroad through my university wasn’t as straightforward as I thought.
The Complications of Studying Abroad
I had already completed my general education requirements at a community college, leaving only upper-division courses to be taken. These classes couldn’t be taken abroad, making the study abroad program seem unnecessary. Furthermore, the study abroad office at my university was unhelpful and discouraged me from applying due to my advanced standing. The final blow was the hefty cost of studying abroad through my university, which would have put me in debt.
Exploring Alternative Options
I was determined to find a way to study abroad without breaking the bank. I researched alternative programs in Europe, including those offered by BUNAC and Cultural Vistas. Although they weren’t the right fit for me, they led me to discover the Goethe Institute, a state-run language program in Germany. I decided to take a month-long language course, which would allow me to immerse myself in the culture at a fraction of the cost.
A Different Kind of Experience
In June 2019, I arrived in Freiburg, Germany, feeling nervous but excited. I didn’t know anyone, and my German was limited. However, as I settled into my residence and began classes, I knew I had made the right decision. The teaching was excellent, and my classmates were wonderful. The cultural excursions offered each week allowed me to explore the region and make new friends.
The Advantages of Direct Enrollment
My independent study abroad trip cost less than half of what my school’s program would have. Although I didn’t receive class credit, I gained invaluable life experience, improved my language skills, and formed lasting friendships. The autonomy of direct enrollment allowed me to take ownership of my experience and make the most of my time abroad.
A Life-Changing Experience
My study abroad experience gave me a serious confidence boost. I navigated a foreign country with limited language knowledge, made friends despite my social anxiety, and discovered the importance of cultural experiences. It has broadened my horizons and inspired me to consider becoming an au pair after graduation. If I had to do it all again, the only thing I would change is to stay longer.
