As I reflect on my journey, I realize that my struggles with disordered eating and weight loss are eerily similar to my struggles with money management. It’s a pattern I’ve seen repeated in my clients, too. We often approach dieting and finance with an all-or-nothing mindset, leading to feelings of restriction, deprivation, and ultimately, failure.

The Dieting Cycle

When we decide to lose weight, we often start by cutting out entire food groups and drastically reducing our calorie intake. This restrictive approach may lead to short-term weight loss, but it’s unsustainable and can trigger overeating, binges, and a sense of failure. We get stuck in a cycle of dieting, feeling like we’re constantly on or off the “bandwagon.”

The Financial Paradox

Similarly, when we try to manage our finances, we often adopt an overly restrictive approach. We cut back on spending, save aggressively, and deprive ourselves of enjoyment. But this can lead to feelings of frustration and resentment, causing us to splurge or make impulsive purchases. We end up stuck in a cycle of saving and spending, feeling like we’re never truly in control.

The Power of Self-Awareness

To break free from these cycles, we need to start with self-awareness. We must recognize our patterns and behaviors, and understand what drives our decisions. By acknowledging our feelings and desires, we can create a new response that serves us better.

Finding Balance

So, how do we find balance in food and finance? By giving ourselves permission to enjoy life’s pleasures in moderation. By setting realistic goals and allowing ourselves wiggle room. By recognizing that freedom and flexibility are essential to long-term success.

A Healthier Approach

In my work as a food freedom coach, I encourage clients to focus on nourishment, not deprivation. I recommend allowing themselves a daily treat, practicing moderation, and finding a balance that feels sustainable. This approach helps them develop a healthier relationship with food and reach their weight loss goals.

Applying the Lesson to Finance

The same principles apply to finance. By allowing ourselves a “treat” budget, setting realistic savings goals, and finding a balance between saving and spending, we can develop a healthier relationship with money. We can break free from the cycle of restriction and deprivation, and find freedom and flexibility in our financial lives.

Ultimately, the key to success lies in finding balance and flexibility. By recognizing that we deserve freedom and enjoyment in both food and finance, we can create a more sustainable and fulfilling approach to life.
