Traveling on a Shoestring: How I Made the Most of My European Adventure
Last April, I embarked on a thrilling European escapade with a tight budget of $500, which translated to 440 euros. As a part-time worker living on my husband’s salary, I had to be mindful of every penny. But with the help of Google Sheets, I was able to track my spending and stay within my means.
Planning Ahead
Before departing, I created a Google Sheet to outline my daily expenses. I allocated columns for each day of the trip, including travel days, and rows for four spending categories: food, lodging, transportation, and extras. I started by budgeting for lodging, which was the largest expense. Since I was staying with friends in Munich, I didn’t need to worry about accommodation costs for the first two nights. However, I had already booked an Airbnb in Madrid, which would cost 43 euros per night.
Next, I estimated my food budget, aiming to spend around 33 euros per day. I also allocated 10 euros daily for transportation and 5 euros for extras. To leave some wiggle room, I budgeted a total of 407 euros.
Tracking Expenses on the Go
Throughout my trip, I regularly updated my Google Sheet, even when I was in vacation mode. It was easy to do, and I got excited whenever I found myself under budget or on target. I shared my budgeting method with my friends, and it became a fun conversation starter.
The ability to access my Google Sheet without WiFi was crucial. I could pull it up anywhere, anytime, and update my expenses in seconds. When I connected to WiFi later, the changes were saved automatically, ensuring I didn’t forget to add any purchases.
The Benefits of Budgeting
Using a detailed travel budget was a new experience for me. In the past, I would save up a lump sum and track my spending casually. But by monitoring my expenses closely, I felt more confident about my financial situation. I was able to make informed decisions about what I could afford and what I could skip.
As a result, I passed up unnecessary purchases and ended up with extra money at the end of the trip. I even treated myself to a gorgeous black leather duffel bag from a thrift store for 39 euros.
Lessons Learned
In the end, I spent only 366 euros out of my 440-euro budget. I was thrilled to have come in under budget and realized the importance of tracking my expenses. If I were to do it again, I would make a few tweaks to my Google Sheet. I would auto-sum each day’s totals to get a better sense of my daily spending. I would also separate pre-paid costs, like lodging, from my daily calculations.
The Power of Digital Budgeting
I went from being a travel budget newbie to becoming a advocate for digital budgeting. Google Sheets made it easy and straightforward to track my expenses. While you may prefer other methods, I encourage you to try digital budgeting on your next trip. It won’t ruin the relaxed vibe; instead, it will give you peace of mind and help you make the most of your adventure.
