Behind the Counter: The Unsung Heroes of the Pandemic

Unsung Heroes of the Pandemic

As a pharmacy technician, I never thought I’d find myself on the frontlines of a global crisis. My role, once a means to a paycheck, has taken on a new significance in the wake of COVID-19.

A Routine Disrupted

My days were once predictable: data entry, insurance billing, filling prescriptions, and managing inventory. But when the pandemic hit, our small pharmacy was inundated with patients and calls. We struggled to keep up with the demand, and our understaffed team was stretched to the breaking point.

The Weight of Responsibility

As an “essential worker,” I felt a mix of emotions. On one hand, I was grateful to still have a job. On the other, I resented the fact that I was expected to put myself at risk while others were told to stay home. It seemed unfair that I, along with other essential workers, were shouldering the burden of keeping society running.

Fear and Uncertainty

We faced the constant threat of exposure, with patients often failing to disclose their COVID-19 status. Our employer encouraged us to clean and sanitize regularly, but it was a small comfort. I felt guilty for feeling scared when others were losing their jobs, but I couldn’t shake the fear that lingered in the back of my mind.

A Newfound Appreciation

As I reflected on my role, I realized that it was more important than I had initially thought. My colleagues and I were providing a sense of normalcy to our customers, many of whom had been with us for years. We were ensuring that they received their necessary medications, and that brought a sense of comfort to our community.

The Bigger Picture

Pharmacies play a vital role in keeping communities healthy, especially during a global crisis. While my job may not be as critical as those on the frontlines of healthcare, it is still essential. I take pride in knowing that my work is helping people maintain their routines and access life-saving medications.

A Call to Action

As we navigate these uncertain times, it’s essential to remember that we’re all in this together. Let’s show kindness to those around us, even if it’s from a distance. Reach out to loved ones, check in on neighbors, and practice social distancing to slow the spread of the virus. We may be apart, but we can still make a difference together.
