The Dark Side of Working from Home: Breaking Free from Bad Habits
As the world adjusts to the new normal of remote work, many of us are finding that the flexibility and convenience of working from home can come with some unexpected downsides. While avoiding long commutes and wearing pajamas all day may seem like a dream come true, it can also lead to bad habits that negatively impact our mental and physical health.
The Slippery Slope of Bad Habits
For me, working from home full-time meant that I slowly started to prioritize getting work done over taking care of myself. I’d skip lunch or eat unhealthy snacks, forget to take breaks, and neglect my social life. I’d work in bed, feeling guilty if I took a few minutes off, and assume that my partner resented me for having the luxury of working from home. I’d rely on my phone to know what the weather was like outside and feel like my work didn’t have as much meaning since I wasn’t in an office.
Breaking Free from Burnout
But after hitting rock bottom, I realized that I needed to make a change. I started taking real lunch breaks, preparing healthy meals, and scheduling time to exercise and socialize. I set boundaries for myself, like not working in bed and taking time off when I needed it. I even started seeing a virtual therapist to help manage my mental health.
The Importance of Self-Care
It’s not always easy, and some days I still find myself reaching for that bag of Cool Ranch Doritos for breakfast. But I’ve learned to be kinder to myself and recognize that taking care of myself is essential to being productive and happy. Working from home doesn’t have to mean sacrificing our well-being; it’s about finding a balance and making intentional choices to prioritize our health and happiness.
Taking Control of Your Day
If you’re struggling with the challenges of working from home, know that you’re not alone. Take control of your day by setting boundaries, prioritizing self-care, and finding ways to stay connected with others. Remember, your work is valuable, regardless of where you do it, and taking care of yourself is essential to doing your best work.
