Anxiety Relief in Uncertain Times: 5 Proven Strategies

Coping with Anxiety in Uncertain Times

The world we live in today is uncharted territory, and it’s no secret that our mental health is taking a hit. Recently, we had the privilege of hosting therapist Kati Morton at our studio, where she shared valuable insights and practical tips on managing anxiety, finances, and our futures.

Staying Grounded with Gratitude

One effective way to combat quarantine anxiety is to focus on what you’re grateful for. Kati recommends making a daily list of six things: two things you’re thankful for, two things you’re working on, and two things you’re looking forward to. This simple exercise helps you stay present while cultivating a sense of hope for the future.

Bridging the Gap to Positive Thinking

When intrusive thoughts take over, it’s challenging to shift into a positive mindset. That’s where “bridge statements” come in. By reframing worrisome thoughts into “it’s possible” statements, you can gradually transition from negative self-talk to a more optimistic outlook. For instance, if you’re stuck on the thought “I’ll never find a job,” you could bridge it by saying, “It’s possible that I’ll find a job that’s a great fit for me.”

Harnessing the Power of Positive Memories

We’ve all been there – stuck in an anxiety loop, replaying a past event over and over. To break free, Kati suggests drawing upon powerful, positive memories that evoke feelings of joy and peace. By recalling these moments, you can yank yourself out of the worry cycle and regain control.

Creating a Sleep Sanctuary

Your bedroom should be a haven for rest and relaxation. Kati advises reserving your bed for sleep and intimacy only, avoiding screens, phones, and even pets. By associating your bed with sleep, you’ll improve the quality of your rest. Additionally, if you consistently struggle to fall asleep at a certain hour, try adjusting your bedtime to that time to break the anxiety cycle.

The Power of a Streamlined To-Do List

To-do lists can be both empowering and overwhelming. Kati recommends limiting your list to seven items or less to avoid feeling overwhelmed and maintain a sense of accomplishment. By prioritizing your tasks, you’ll reduce anxiety and increase productivity.
