Embracing a Simpler Life: How Leaving the City Changed Everything
Growing up in the countryside, I knew the joys of a peaceful, outdoor lifestyle. But as soon as I graduated, the allure of the city beckoned, promising better job opportunities and a vibrant social scene. I spent years living in the city, working for a newspaper, and enjoying the convenience of having everything at my doorstep. However, this lifestyle came at a cost – my food budget was out of control, and I rarely had time to cook or relax at home.
A Turning Point
As I burned out from the fast-paced city life, I realized that something had to change. I switched jobs, packed my bags, and left the city in search of a better quality of life, more space, and a sense of community. The pandemic has accelerated this trend, with more people opting for remote work and seeking a slower pace of life.
A Newfound Sense of Freedom
One of the biggest benefits of leaving the city is the significant reduction in commuting costs. I used to spend hours and hundreds of dollars on yoga and Pilates retreats to unwind, but now I can simply roll out my yoga mat in my garden and follow a YouTube workout. I’ve also ditched expensive boutique studio classes and costly retreats, saving a small fortune.
Cycling Back to Savings
I’ve rediscovered my love for cycling, which has not only improved my physical health but also reduced my transportation costs. Instead of relying on taxis and Ubers, I cycle whenever possible, enjoying the fresh air and exercise.
Food for Thought
Our food budget has almost halved since moving to the countryside. We’ve adopted a meal planning and budgeting system, batch cooking and freezing food to minimize waste and save time and money. Impromptu after-work cocktails have been replaced by drinks at our local pub, where the sense of community is unbeatable.
Breaking Up with Fast Fashion
Living near a shopping mall used to be a recipe for disaster – I’d mindlessly browse and often end up buying things I didn’t need. Now, I consider my purchases more carefully, picturing at least five ways to style a new item with existing clothes. I’ve reduced my fast fashion spending dramatically, opting for fewer, higher-quality items that I truly love.
A More Mindful Approach
Leaving the city has forced me to be more intentional with my spending and time. I no longer impulse buy or take things for granted. Little treats, like take-out or makeup, are now planned and savored.
More Space, Less Stress
One of the biggest advantages of country living is the extra space we have. We’ve traded in our cramped city apartment for a garden, a parking spot, and a more relaxed pace of life. I may miss the excitement of the city, but I’m happy to trade it for a more peaceful, fulfilling existence.
A Word of Advice
If you’re considering leaving the city for a more rural area, take my advice: soak up every last minute of your urban experience. Be a tourist in your own town, take photos, make memories, and leave on a high note. You never know what you might discover in the countryside.
