COVID-19 Relief Update: $300/Week Unemployment Boost Explained

New COVID-19 Relief Plan: What You Need to Know

A much-needed lifeline has been thrown to individuals who have lost their jobs due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A new relief plan has been approved, offering an additional $300 per week to those who are currently receiving unemployment insurance or have recently lost their jobs. To be eligible, you must be receiving at least $100 in standard UI payments per week.

The Catch: Not All States Are On Board

While this news brings some relief, there’s a catch – not all states are participating in the program. Currently, Delaware, Kansas, Nebraska, New Jersey, and South Dakota have not been approved to distribute the extra funds. New Jersey has applied and is awaiting approval.

Why Some States Opted Out

The reasons for not participating vary from state to state. Delaware’s Secretary of Labor, Cerron Cade, expressed concerns that the program is “unnecessarily complicated” and would be difficult to implement quickly. Kansas plans to apply, but initially hesitated due to the limited scope of the assistance program. Nebraska has not provided a reason for not applying, while South Dakota’s Governor Kristi Noem stated that the state is in a fortunate position, with 80% of those who lost their jobs having found new employment.

What This Means for You

If you’re eligible, you can expect to receive the additional $300 per week for three weeks, retroactive to August 1. However, the timeline for when these payments will start is unclear. For now, there’s no action required on your part, except to continue receiving your standard UI payments.
