Prioritizing Mental Health in Turbulent Times
As I sat in front of my therapist, confessing my exhaustion and feelings of being overwhelmed, I realized that even the simplest tasks had become daunting. The weight of my responsibilities, combined with the uncertainty of the pandemic, had taken a toll on my mental health. Despite my initial enthusiasm for teletherapy, I couldn’t shake off the feeling that it wasn’t working for me.
A Proponent of Therapy, But Not This Kind
I’ve always advocated for the importance of therapy, encouraging friends and colleagues to seek help when needed. However, my personal experience with teletherapy fell short of my expectations. The $260 monthly payment began to feel like a burden, and I couldn’t help but wonder if in-person therapy would have been more effective.
The Perfect Storm of Stress
After being laid off due to the pandemic, my anxiety skyrocketed. My husband’s job loss soon followed, and I took on multiple freelancing gigs to support us. The pressure was mounting, and I felt like I was drowning in responsibilities. It was then that I realized I needed to take control of my mental health.
Lessons Learned
1. Setting Boundaries
As a freelancer, it’s easy to get sucked into working around the clock. But I’ve learned that setting limits is crucial. I now prioritize my well-being by establishing a “clock out” time, allowing myself to recharge and tackle tasks with a clearer mind.
2. Validating My Emotions
It’s essential to acknowledge that our worries are valid, especially during these unprecedented times. I’ve come to accept that some days will be tougher than others, and that’s okay.
3. Accepting Help
My husband has been a rock, taking on household chores and supporting me emotionally. I’ve learned to accept help without feeling guilty, recognizing that we’re in this together.
4. Prioritizing Rest
When I need a break, I’m honest with my editors about pushing back deadlines. Thankfully, they’ve been understanding, and I’ve found that taking time to rest has improved my productivity and overall well-being.
5. Exercise as Self-Care
Walking my dog daily has become a therapeutic ritual, providing a much-needed break from the chaos. Exercise has become an essential part of my self-care routine.
6. The Power of Friendship
Talking to friends about my frustrations has been a game-changer. It’s reminded me that I’m not alone, and that sometimes, all it takes is a different perspective to tackle my problems.
7. Gratitude in Uncertain Times
I make it a point to journal and reflect on the things I’m grateful for, acknowledging my privilege and luck. Focusing on the positives has helped me stay grounded during these turbulent times.
By prioritizing my mental health and implementing these strategies, I’ve found a sense of balance and control in my life. It’s not always easy, but it’s a journey worth taking.
